i’ve decided to do a whole series of houses, but this time, they’re going to be homes of friends {instead of strangers}. i started with my new house, and am working my way through the lovely homes of my lovely friends. if all goes well, my plan is to open an etsy shop where you can commission me to draw/paint your house! let’s see where this goes, shall we? {THIS JUST IN:  the shop is open! do you want me to draw your house, or car, because i’ll totally do it!}

Whoa! So exciting! My work from “alleglory” was featured on Frankie Magazine’s blog! Just to put this in context, Frankie is one of my most favorite magazines, so I’m sort of beyond thrilled to be featured! YAY!!!

This is my favorite piece in the show. It’s titled “Michelle Nielsen got a tiara, flowers, and the title of Blossom Princess. I got fourth place.” True story.

So, it’s a pretty personal series {mixed media on watercolor paper – yes, those are real scratch n’ sniff stickers!}, and I really had no intention of trying to sell it, or show it to many people for that matter… but Kate convinced me otherwise. Anywho, here’s what this series is all about:

This series, titled ‘Blush’ is about me coming into my sexuality a little earlier than I probably should have. They are the combination of my experiences as a young teenager –  the exciting discovery of some very old playboy magazines, a high school sweetheart who loved KISS {the soundtrack of our relationship}, combined with still being very young & naive. Let’s just say I was still collecting sparkly stickers, and had a love of all things rainbow! It’s meant to represent the confusing, beautiful kaleidoscope that was my innocence and curiosity, all mixed into one.

These are two of my most recent pieces. I can’t seem to get enough of nude ladies from the 60s?! Oh well, I actually like them quite a bit, so I’ll keep on going. Both pieces are mixed media collage on watercolor paper. Oh, speaking of paper, these original pieces are on their way to Nashville… yes, Nashville!  Why? Well, I’m lucky enough to be part of an online art collective/gallery called Paper House Press. I am so thrilled, and honored, to have been asked to be on this amazing roster of artists. Oh, internet… you make so many crazy things possible. I was contacted by Austin based musician Ben Kweller last week {well, his wife Liz, actually}… they want to use my piece, titled “Barbara did not respond well to  name calling”, for the cover of a new 7″ vinyl single that he’s putting out. WHAT?!?!  I’ll post the final album cover when it’s ready. Thank you internet… and Liz & Ben!

I have had no time for my own work lately (must get back into the studio!!), but these are the latest pieces. Yep, another trip down memory lane! Old Volvo station wagons, and musty tent trailers totally remind me of childhood. Ahh, the 70’s. I really like the cars… maybe I’ll work them into some paintings with my little suburban houses… that is, if I can find my way back to the studio one of these days.

I have no idea where these are going… maybe nowhere… but I like making the sweater patterns… so maybe I’ll keep playing. Hm.

Whoa. I got into The Cheaper Show. Very, very happy. Ok, now to decide which pieces I’m putting in… any thoughts?

Ahh, I love mornings at the studio! I had a bunch of these just waiting for final touches (you know, embroidered pasties and whatnot).
